The short answer
Brown leaf tips do not automatically mean “needs more water.” Dry roots, heat, wind, excess fertilizer or salts, damaged roots and poor drainage can all interrupt water movement through a plant.
Map where the browning begins, feel the active root zone, and reconstruct the previous one to two weeks. Already-brown tissue will not turn green; judge recovery from healthy new growth and whether the damage stops spreading.

Check the root-to-leaf path
Leaves depend on roots, stems and water-conducting tissue. The University of Maryland Extension lists drought and excessive heat, salt or fertilizer damage, excess water, poor drainage and compacted soil among possible causes of leaf scorch. That overlap is why a brown margin cannot identify the cause by itself.
1. Check moisture below the surface
Feel several inches down or inspect the root ball. A container can have a dry center after light watering, while an outer pot or blocked drain can keep the same roots saturated. Outdoors, check whether water runs off compacted soil or collects around the crown.
2. Review heat, sun and wind exposure
Look for damage concentrated on the side facing afternoon sun, a reflective wall or persistent wind. Oregon State University Extension advises supporting plants after extreme heat with appropriate watering and delaying pruning until the extent of injury is clear. Do not remove every damaged leaf during the stressful event if it still shades living tissue.
3. Reconstruct fertilizer and salt exposure
Record recent feeding, a stronger-than-labeled mix, deicing salt, softened water, or a spill near the roots. Do not “balance” suspected excess fertilizer with another product. Confirm the likely exposure and follow species- and site-appropriate guidance before trying to leach a container or soil.
4. Inspect roots and stems
Firm roots and intact stems support a different conclusion from soft, dark roots, foul odor, girdling ties or damaged bark. A whole canopy declining after construction or trenching also deserves a root-zone assessment, even if the visible symptom is at the leaf edge.
What not to do first
- Do not water every day without checking the root zone.
- Do not add fertilizer because brown tissue looks “hungry.”
- Do not diagnose fungal disease from a scorched edge alone.
- Do not prune a large tree canopy simply to remove brown leaves.
- Do not expect dead tips or margins to become green again.
When brown spots need a different path
Discrete spots, rings, halos, surface growth or rapidly expanding lesions require their own evidence. Use the spots on plant leaves guide. If the plant is also limp or curled, use the curling or drooping decision path and compare the root-zone result.
Escalate when the stakes or scale are high
Contact local Extension, a plant diagnostic lab or a certified arborist when browning spreads through a mature tree, follows construction or suspected chemical drift, includes extensive stem or root decay, or affects several plants in a pattern. A laboratory may be needed to separate some diseases from environmental scorch.
