The short answer

Write down the candidates, then compare observable traits. Start with leaf arrangement, growth habit, stem, flower or fruit, scale, season and region. Take a new photo that shows the trait the first image missed rather than submitting the same close-up again.

If the evidence supports only a genus, stop at genus. If the plant may be eaten, toxic, invasive or relevant to treatment, ask a qualified local expert to confirm it.

Build a two-candidate comparison

For the two most plausible candidates, create a simple table with three columns: trait, candidate A, candidate B. Use a reputable regional flora, Extension resource, herbarium or botanical key—not another image-search result—as the comparison source.

  • Growth habit: tree, shrub, vine, clump, rosette or spreading mat.
  • Leaf arrangement: alternate, opposite, whorled or basal.
  • Leaf detail: simple or compound, margin, veins, hair and attachment.
  • Stem: woody or soft, round or angled, hairy, thorny, hollow or colored.
  • Flower or fruit: attachment, grouping, parts, shape and season.
  • Place: region, habitat, planted or wild, wet or dry, sun or shade.

A trait only helps if you can actually observe it. Leave the row unknown instead of filling it from the candidate description.

Take the photo that separates the candidates

Oklahoma State University Extension recommends clear, focused images that show the whole plant, its site and multiple useful parts. Capture a short sequence for your record:

  1. Whole plant and surrounding habitat.
  2. Several leaves attached to one stem.
  3. Upper and lower leaf surface.
  4. Stem, bark, thorns or hairs.
  5. Attached flower, fruit or seed structure when present.
  6. A scale reference beside—not covering—the feature.

If an app accepts one image per check, choose the view containing the missing separator for the next check. Keep the other views in your garden record so you can compare them with a reference or expert.

Do not compare confidence scores across apps

A displayed score is defined by that product’s model and interface. Eighty percent in one app is not necessarily stronger than seventy percent in another, and neither number proves calibration on your plant group or region. Stop at the most specific supported level: “likely maple” is more useful than a false species name when the photo does not show the traits that separate maples.

When a local expert is the next step

Use a county Extension office, plant diagnostic clinic, herbarium, native plant society or appropriately qualified horticulture professional when the identity affects eating, toxicity, livestock or pet exposure, invasive-species reporting, pesticide use, or removal of a valuable plant. Send the candidate list and the evidence that agrees and conflicts; that is more useful than sending only the apps’ screenshots.
